What Differentiates Spiral Wound Gaskets From Other Gasket Types?
The structure and sealing qualities of spiral-coiled gaskets set them apart from other gasket types. Spiral wound gaskets include alternating layers of metallic and non-metallic materials coiled in a spiral arrangement, whereas jacketed gaskets have a metal cover over a filler substance, and sheet gaskets are made by punching out a gasket shape from a sheet of material. Spiral wound gaskets offer excellent sealing ability, suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure applications. They have good compressibility and recovery, though installation can be complex. Non-asbestos gaskets are resilient with chemical resistance but are best for low-pressure, low-temperature settings. Envelope/double-jacketed gaskets provide high chemical resistance but suffer under compression and have a slow recovery, making them less suitable for high bolt loads.
